There are many different opinions on writers’ block. Some people treat it as an enormous, important problem which severely affects people, others jokingly say they have it whenever they can’t write for a couple of days, while others still will say that writers’ block is an excuse used by lazy authors.

Personally, I’ve dealt with writers’ block and overcome it. I have also had patches in my life when ideas and characters didn’t come into my mind they way they usually would and I got bored with writing. I don’t think that these patches were writer’s block, I just refer to them as being a “Different Me”. Nowadays, I’m back to being myself and I am having ideas again. I decided to make a blog, but there is one difficulty that I have encountered.

I’ll be lying in bed at two o’clock in the morning one day and ideas, sentences and whole stories and posts will flow into my mind without me having ever bothered to invite them. Then I’ll sit down at my disfunctional laptop and only be able to write down fragments from what I remember of these late-night thoughts. The fragment will sound amazing, insightful, beautiful, but then they’ll be filled up with useless, cliché waffle and the whole post will lose its magic.

For a non-topical blog to be pure and personal and amazing, I think that posts need to come from deep inside ourselves. They shouldn’t be artificial, they shouldn’t be what we think people will want to read or what will come up first in google searches. Maybe blogs like these could still become popular and maybe they will still help people, so what right have I to complain? None whatsoever, it’s just that I want my blog to have that special element.

The ideal solution would probably be to come up with some brilliant machine which can read my every thought and put it down on paper. Then all I would have to do is dream and let my mind be free. And the pure beauty of those thoughts wouldn’t be tampered with by the whole process of writing them down.

So what is the problem? From what I have written so far, it sounds like a general writing issue. I think that it is in part that. Also, I am pretty certain that nobody can immediately transfer thoughts to paper, so maybe it’s just something that everyone has to overcome.

Please leave a comment and let me know if you deal with these kinds of things.

Am I just complaining about things I know nothing about?

  1. I find the more I write and focus on generating ideas the more ideas I come up with. And I always come up with them at the most inconvenient times. I work in retail so of course I think of a million great post ideas at the busiest time of the day when I can’t take a moment to write them down. Then I get home with my list that I’ve managed to cobble together and only one or two of the ideas seem workable.

You just always have to be ready to write something down. Write it sideways across your notebook in the dark if you have to.

Cliches have meaning too. All cliches came from somewhere honest and true and sometimes you have to peel back those layers to find what you’re really trying to get at.

    1. Thank you so much for your comment and the advice!
Yes, you’re right, actively thinking of ideas throughout the day does help. My course notes are usually a mixture of what the lecturer actually said and random thoughts and ideas 🙂
I like what you said about clichés. I guess I never thought of it that way before, but you’re absolutely right.

  2. I’m the same. My thoughts are usually a chaotic mess and I struggle to pen them down properly. Just writing down the words helps a lot. You don’t have to publish it, but still write it down somewhere. Perhaps leave it for an hour or two at least and then when you come back to edit. Your brain would have had a little time to subconsciously ponder over what you want to say and the exact phrasing you want, so the post starts to sound a lot better this time around.

    1. I’m glad to hear that other people feel the same way. You’re absolutely right, even if the words that come out when trying to write down thoughts aren’t as wonderful and amazing as what was in our minds, I guess they can still be good and beautiful. 🙂 Thank you for leaving a comment! 🙂

    1. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
Yeah, this is probably only true for posts which don’t follow a topic that you already decided on. When you have an idea for a science-y/general factual post, researching the matter and writing the post is quite straightforward 🙂
